if people could stop complaining about how "it doesn't do anything spectacular or new", that'd be great. sometimes you can appreciate a movie for doing something familiar- but doing it masterfully. that's sword of the stranger. the action is meticulously choreographed, and crackles with an energy wholly unique to anime. however, it's the personalities of the two leads which truly carry the movie.
we've seen these two a million times, in a million different movies, games, shows, and books. the quiet ronin with something dark in his past, and the spitfire kid with a mouth on him. they become unlikely allies, and eventually friends. this is so common because it just works so damn well. nevertheless, sword of the stranger does it well enough that it renders its ilk stale by comparison.
sword of the stranger isn't "just another movie like that", it's the culmination of many tried-and-true elements, distilled into precisely what works, and leaving whatever doesn't by the wayside. the movie is lean and engaging throughout. it also doesn't hurt that an adorable dog is essentially one of the main characters.
it's just weird to chastise the movie for not being more radical when it was never trying to be. it's like criticizing a steak-and-potatoes meal for not being more daring. sometimes you just want steak and potatoes. that's what sword of the stranger is. and, trust me, the cook knew what he was doing.
if you want a blood drenched, blade swinging romp through feudal japan, with a sharp-witted, no-name ronin (you know the type), and mouthy brat in tow- look no further...
the steak here is exceptionally good.
