redline is a bit of a mixed bag for me. the movie has a lot of potential which ultimately isn't realized, but does have its share of redeeming qualities.
the first of these is the extremely detailed and high level of animation. the animation in redline is expertly done, although that being said i did not particularly care for it, as i felt it was conflicted on trying to be realistic or not, and the animators could have handled this a bit better. that being said, the movie is definitely visually appealing and features a slick futuristic cyberpunk-esque aesthetic.
redline's primarily about racing, so it's crucial the race scenes are executed well. this was generally my impression, with some very compelling racing sequences sprinkled in throughout the film. redline also had a surprising amount of genuinely funny moments as well.
unfortunately, this movie didn't feature many other enjoyable components. with such a visually appealing film, i was surprised at how poor the overall sound of the film was, it felt ill-fitting more often than not. i also did not care for the juxtaposed scene/sonic placement that was used multiple times, this effect didn't work particularly well.
this film also had some structural issues. the film never really had a consistent flow, constantly switching between characters and planets and motives at random, seemingly. this is also another complaint i have, in which the sheer amount of these motives/subplots resulted in none of them being truly developed or fleshed out well at all. i also felt that redline definitely needed more exposition scenes, and the ones that were featured were ultimately ineffective and hollow.
there were a number of questionable scenes in redline. i say this because the movie made a lot of virtually random choices. the chief offender of this is the random and completely unnecessary nudity and over sexualization of the lead female character and the other few female characters present in the movie. there were also a number of other randomly jarring scenes embedded within redline.
overall, i feel this movie had a lot of potential. it executed some key elements well, but also made a number of poor decisions. leaving the viewer with a mixed bag
