An adaptation of the thousand year folklore tale: "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter", a coming of age story with a bittersweet ending. It's a beautiful movie where there is quite a bit happening.
Perhaps the most important aspect is the irony of the fate that others bring upon you when they wish the best for you. Concretely, in the movie we see the father pursuing riches and status for his daughter rather than asking what she wants and supporting her decision. It's debatable of what indeed would be the best, and whether the movie is being romantic and idealistic in its message, particularly given the time period it happens, but there is food for thought there.
Apart from that, there are several other themes and archetypes hidden in plain sight in this tale.
After reading the Wikipedia description of the original tale I wished they had included the final parts of the tale in the movie, as it connects to the history of Japan.
The animation is original and artistic, having its own distinct style, somewhere between impressionism and water colours based paintings.
