Beloved by fans from all over the world, Totoro is often considered the pinnacle of feel-good anime. I, however, strongly disagree and intend to present an outside perspective rarely brought to light. I watched this movie recently for the first time, so nostalgia plays no role in this stage of thought. I feel the need to say it since, apparently, a lot of people hold much of their appreciation towards this film out of fond memories of their childhood or perhaps how much they liked it a long time ago despite not having seen it since then and... read more 1 of

IN BRIEF: Sometime in the 20th century, and somewhere in rural Japan, a man and his two daughters move into an empty house in a small village near the hospital where the fourth member of their family is recovering from an undescribed infirmity. The girls, Satsuki and Mei, find a horde of hidden fantasy creatures living in their house and the nearby forest. The most interesting of these they choose to call Totoro, and they spend the summer roaming about and enjoying adventures with their new fantastical friends - until a tragedy threatens to destroy the family. Can Totoro help Satsuki in... read more Was this review helpful to you?

what can you say about totoro? it's cute and wholesome and positive and the art is gorgeous. and weirdly, it brought back childhood memories i didn't know i had. i thought i had never actually seen this film in full but watching it now brought back vivid memories. sitting in an unfurnished apartment with my mom and watching this while eating pizza. i don't know what leads you to forget memories like that but it's probably a pretty big credit to a film when it brings back memories like that within the first 30 minutes of you watching it 15+ years later. definitely deserving of being such an... read

A lot to like here, but one particular detail that sums up Totoro's alternative style of narrative is that Satsuki (Noriko Hidaka) says she "hates boys" and that she has no interest in Kanta (Tanie Kitabayashi), and where a lot of movies would pair them off at the end for the sake of “closure” or “a happy ending” Totoro doesnt fall into this trope, and has faith that it's ending is happy and magical enough as it is (it is). Our main character doesnt go through some forced change of heart and little girls everywhere watching Totoro for the first time get to hold on to their belief that boys... read

My Neighbor Totoro is one of those movies that never gets old and that has something for everyone. My two-year-old niece adores it, and my dad does too. It’s a wonderful story for many diverse reasons. Just as a start, the animation and the music are wonderful. Joe Hisaishi has some of the most interesting and beautiful film scores out there, and the score for this movie is no exception. And yes, the art isn’t always as detailed in some scenes as the modern CG stuff that’s created today, but the form, the details that the artists choose to capture, and the overall flavor of the place and... read more 1 of
