In brief: Subaru has been a loner and a professional writer for years; he's out of practice at dealing with other people, to the point where he does most of his shopping online and despises his new editor's suggestion of regular public meetings. But when Subaru goes to leave an offering at his parents' grave, a stray cat eats it instead and worms her way into his house. She brings new life experiences with her, and helps him to get past his buried feelings of grief. What he doesn't realize is how the cat, who he's named Haru, sees their lives together.
