Oh... my... goodness... What did I just... * SIGH * OK, unlike many others, I didn't hate previous movie much. Sure, it was far from being good. It had that crappy aftertaste that many superhero movies from 90s had. I mean, Captain America (1990), Spawn, Steel, The Shadow, The Phantom... that kind of stuff. It felt cheap, it felt cheesy, it was poorly written and so on, but... I can't say I hated it. this is so much fun, and a great sequel. we get more weird tom hardy and now we get a serial killer woody harrelson? and they fight? hell yeah. this film toys around with other genres, at one point its a breakup film. the dialogue is decent, the supporting cast are overshadowed a bit, and the action and effects take a large step up. this feels like a film people had fun making. dudes rock. read more

PG13 a mistake?

Given the base material (particularly Carnage), the decision to go PG13 hamstrings it from the start. The movie is schizophrenic in its conception struggling to choose between mass-market child-friendly and something darker which would make this story what it was destined to be. This echoes the struggle between Venom and Eddie, and the choice between comedic and thriller/action. In the end the producers could not or would not resolve any of these dilemmas and they attempt to please all the people and end up pleasing none.

My quick rating - 6;3/10. A bit late here; and this one is already available on Bluray (click the poster below if you are interested). While the first Venom was quite a step away from the general superhero flicks that Marvel was giving us; this one takes an even stranger turn. YES. I honestly didn't have any expectations going into this, the first one was meh and I didn't pay attention to any news or information about this one. Andy Serkis directed? I had no idea. This movie was so quick in most parts it felt like it was taking notes from episodic TV shows where they have to cover motivation, the meat of the story, and the conclusion in 30-45 minutes and I don't mean that in a bad way. Indescribably weird. Hardy just doubles down on how odd he plays Eddie/Venom, and Woody Harrelson is on the exact same wavelength. Even with squiffy execution and an excessive amount of growly one liners from its titular character, this is much more decisive in what kind of movie it wants to be than it's predecessor and a much more memorable villain. It's still far from perfect and honestly I find the whole aesthetic kind of ugly, but it's a fun performance driven B movie. There are worse ways to spend 97 minutes. read more

The first one was somewhat decent, not the best movie ever but it had some nice moments. This one was just annoying the whole way through. If venom really joins the MCU they will need to make some big improvements, having a different/better actor for Eddie would be a good start. At least he's better than Frances. This movie both is and isn't better than its predecessor. Where as this movies plot is more consistent and has less plot holes it is slower to get the engine running, where as Venom started the action right away. This movie does well to focus on Venom and Eddie's relationship and the problems that come with being attached to a symbiote that has specific dietary/murderous needs. Unfortunately this does take time away from the action that carnage rightfully deserves. There are also some questionable lines and changes to carnage origins and Shrieks character as a whole. read more

Sony hasn't gotten it right since Spiderman 2. This was meh. It's basically the plot of SupermanA two. Woody Harrelson replays his role from Natural Born Killers as a 60 year old dude with an ugly woman. I know it's a weird complaint but at one point Carnage is as tall as a building then he's smaller than a back pack? And of course it's 2021 so the mugger is a white male and the victim a black woman because to portray it any other way is forbidden. These movies have no weight, at no point do you feel invested it's more or less ok a few minutes left, how will he get out of this? Meh read more
