Elvis is directed by Baz Luhrmann and the movie is an enjoyable experience but it certainly doesnt deserve that Best Picture nomination. Austin Butler is amazing here, he really is, but I think Colin Farrell is still my choice to win Best Actor. Austin Butler is playing Elvis perfectly, easily the best part of the film, but it just didnt exceed my expectations enough to make me believe he should win the Best Actor award. I've never been a fan of Baz Luhrmann, thoroughly hating Moulin Rouge, Romeo + Juliet, … but heres a film where the style perfectly fits the substance. The first hour is so energetic that it deprives you of a whole week of sleep, but as the life of Elvis progresses, the film slows down. The extravagance becomes a mere layer for a story that is tragic, but not melodramatic. My quick rating - 7;2/10. Another Oscar nominee for best picture. Austin Butler was excellent in his depiction of Elvis. Often times he was holding this movie together since Baz Luhrmann has a tendency to get a bit lost in his own flicks. One thing that stuck out to me in this is the complete lack of addressing the drug problem that Elvis had. I understand trying to keep with the all American image; but if you are going to show the highs and lows of a legends career such as this; you cannot just ignore a major component to how he was after returning from the Army. What it lacks in deep diving character analysis, it makes up for in comprehensive coverage of each of Elvis' distinctive phases broken down into separate acts and held together by strong central performances, both of which are much better than either of them seemed in the trailer.
