A boring take on Vikings that is only really remembered in my mind for its wicked action, beautiful sets/character designs, and wonderful performance from its main character. The plot is forgettable and just not for me. Sick ass fight at the end with the volcano but that fight overall waters down the main themes of revenge so prevalent throughout. robert eggers loves a poetic archetype. you've got your cryptic nature prophesies, plot dump soliloquies, characters doing terrible things because a bird told them to. two women get names and only both of them are agentless plot devices! i appreciate this movie more as a technical undertaking than something i enjoy watching, which is the pithiest cop out for actual criticism but the only way i can square hating the watch but loving the production (except the cg which looks like a ps2 prerendered cutscenes). cannot imagine a grimier movie coming out this year. eggers is a coward for hiding the... read more

Robert Eggerss signature is all over it, and it feels like the most natural transition for him from “The Lighthouse". The screenplay is written in the style of a stage play. Not a dull moment. Theres a large, vast, and deep feel to this film. Its broken into chapters, each with several scene changes. It undoubtedly delivers on what it implicitly promises. My quick rating - 6;9/10. Another flick I have been looking forward to. With all the hype; you would hope it would be worth it. Instead; I feel like I just watched this year's "Green Knight." OK; a better version of it. Another flick that has all the right aesthetics but flounders in a different spot. Still; let's talk about how this looks. It has every making of a quality epic flick. Eggers is a historian who has decided to teach through filmmaking instead of in the classroom. His commentaries on his films are always fascinating to listen to, delving into the pain-staking detail that is sometimes very obvious and sometimes completely missed by the audience. Many might bully the effort if it isn't seen or heard, but I believe he sees the shortcomings of his madness more than anyone else but his passion is so severe that he cannot stop himself. Definitely different, not a time period I generally enjoy but this was pretty entertaining. It's brutal that's for sure and hard to believe these are the ancestors of people who are completely beaten down today and allowed their countries to be overrun so easily.Nicole Kidman is creepy as hell just like in real life so not much acting there. I didn't even recognize Ethan Hawke until I saw his name at the end. None of the "diversity" of Norse mythology as seen in the ridiculous Marvel nonsense where Asgard is somehow New York in its demographics. Worth a watch. read more

It got even better on rewatch, I noticed so many little details that I hadn't before. When Seeress (Björk) appears she's weaving just how it says the Norns weaved the prince's fate. Ravens usually represent death in media but in this film they represent the Raven King, but you can read it either way and it works because Aurvandil (Ethan Hawke) is the one who leads Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård) to his death. Amleth comes close to crying in multiple scenes, when he finds out Heimir (Willem Dafoe) died, when he finds out he's going to have a child... but he resists it, refusing to end his read more
