This movie stars Ethan Hawke... Or, at least I THINK it does as you never really see his face. Hawke plays a character called The Grabber which is a funny name until you realize he's not playing one of the monsters from Tremors.... he's grabbing kids! We don't meet The Grabber until some time into the movie but his presence is everywhere in the opening act, as we follow young Finney and his sister Gwen (Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw; both excellent) as their circle of friends gets smaller and smaller. The Black Phone probably has the most suspense out of any movie in 2022! Ethan Hawke does an outstanding job here as The Grabber! Every scene he pops up in he just looks menacing, scary and it really pumps up your suspense! I love how when the phone rings and it reveals the next few moments of the story! Even when the phone rang it felt scary! Finney Blake is a decent character here with the actor doing a good performance also! Overall, The Black Phone is the best horror movie of 2022 so far! Thats all I have to say there, its that good! read more

The action feels weird and cheap, the acting of the kids is good but there's also some cringe acting/character, for example the protagonist's father, that one it's so bad done and completely unnecessary.

i haven't seen a real horror movie in a while, so i was out of my usual element. i enjoyed the kid performances, this movie puts a lot of focus on finney especially. gwen was also another standout. ethan hawke also really sells it as a deranged grabber. i usually think of the supernatural elements of a horror movie working against the protagonists, but i was pleasantly surprised to find out it was all the previous victims actually trying to help finney. definitely a plus when one of them was actually introduced earlier in the film. might finally be down to watch more horror movies, this was a... read more

this movie suffers from a lot of horror movie logic to keep the plot moving forward. that being said, the way it's acted, shot, directed, etc. was pretty decent. i can absolutely see why someone would love this movie, that person just isn't me. read more

If done right, it could be enjoyable

The story has potential, but the casting is just bad, barely feel any emotion from any of the characters (especially the main, Finn). I really like the idea of the past victims helping the current victim escape (similar to the 2009 Coraline), well, not all of their help really helps tho...

My quick rating - 7;0/10. They pushed this one out for a $20 rental while it is still in the top 10 at the theaters. Click below to check it out on Amazon or check around since it is playing on numerous VOD platforms. I think the only thing that places this in horror is the supernatural element of speaking with the dead kids. Otherwise; this is a very well-made straight-up thriller. read more

I was looking forward to this and it didn't dissapoint. This is one of the better horror movies out there with just the right amount of tension. Granted there were a few stupid moments but horror movies are never perfect. Ethan Hawke seemed to enjoy his portrayal of the twisted bad guy. Rated well it's well worth a watch. read more

Really liked the concept and I think it was executed about as well as it could have been. Each of the callers having their own personality and way of helping Finney was much appreciated. Ethan Hawke is unsurprisingly great but Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw really blew me away. This may have been my favorite ending of the year, so far, as well - extremely satisfying. read more

Chilling performance from Ethan Hawke. The child actors are also really good in this. Not so much a scary horror movie, but one that creates a very unsettling atmosphere. I would never survive cause my anxiety would make me not answer the phone. read more

3.5Wow, a good NEW horror film? I'm shocked. I saw the preview awhile ago and thought it looked interesting but it seemed to disappear quick. Definitely worth a watch would be a good double feature with Chained from 2012.Of course it being a modern movie it has to push it's agenda it features the strong female in the form of the sister but it's not overdone. It also has the white bully getting beat up after calling the Mexican kid a beaner. read more
