Beautiful and timeless tale about injustice, love, and liberty. The movie is a musical adaptation of Victor Hugo's book.
It tells the story of people during the 19th century. A time when human lives - particularly of poor people - are worth little to none and the punishment for the lightest crime are extremely harsh and out of proportion, leaving no room for redemption or change. A time when you're either born with privilege or you're fated to live destitute and in poverty until you die. Hunger leads to anger, and anger leads to rebellion... and so it happened during the French Revolution.
The movie was great, very well adapted to the musical format, but at times felt a bit too long or dragging too much. I found the parts/chapters about love too soppy and definitely the weakest parts of the movie.

Chain Gang: Look down, look down, you'll always be a slave. Look down, look down, you're standing in your grave.

Javert: Now Prisoner 24601, your time is up and your parole's begun. You know what that means?
Jean Valjean: Yes, it means I'm free.
Javert: No.
Javert: Follow to the letter your itinerary, this badge of shame you wear until you die. It warns that you're a dangerous man.
Jean Valjean: I stole a loaf of bread. My sisters child was close to death, and we were starving...
Javert: And you will starve again unless you learn the meaning of the law!
Jean Valjean: I've learnt the meaning of those nineteen years; a slave of the law.
Javert: Five years for what you did. The rest because you tried to run, yes 24601...
Jean Valjean: My name is Jean Valjean!
Javert: And I'm Javert! Do not forget my name. Do not forget me, 24601.

Jean Valjean: Freedom at last. How strange the taste. Never forget the years, the waste. Nor forgive them for what they've done. They are the guilty. Everyone.

Clerk: Valjean, as a dangerous man, you will be on parole forever. Failure to report means immediate arrest.

Bishop: But remember this my brother. See in this some higher plan. You must use this precious silver to become an honest man.

Sailors: I smell women. Smell 'em in the air. Think I'll drop my anchor. In that harbor over there. Lovely lady I'll love you till I'm broke. Seven months at sea and now I'm hungry for a poke! Even stokers need a little stoke!

Whores: Lovely ladies. Waiting for a bite! Waiting for the customers. Who only come at night. Lovely ladies. Ready for the call. Standing up or lying down. Or any way at all. Bargain prices up against the wall!

Whores: Lovely ladies waiting in the dark. Ready for a thick one or a quick one in the park. Long time, short time, any time, my dear! Costs a little extra if you want to take all year. Quick and cheap is underneath the pier.

Whores: Come on, dearie, why all the fuss? You're no grander than the rest of us. Life has dropped you at the bottom of the heap. Join your sisters, make money in your sleep. That's right, dearie, show him what you've got. That's right, dearie, let him have the lot.

Whores: Old men, young men Take 'em as they come! Harbor rats and alley cats and every kind of scum. Poor men, rich men, leaders of the land. See them with their trousers off. They're never quite as grand! All it takes is money in your hand. Lovely ladies, going for a song. Got a lot of callers, but they never stay for long.

Fantine: I dreamed a dream in time gone by. When hope was high, and life worth living. I dreamed that love would never die. I dreamed that God would be forgiving. Then I was young and unafraid. And dreams were made and used and wasted. There was no ransom to be paid. No song unsung, no wine untasted. But the tigers come at night. With their voices soft as thunder. As they tear your hope apart. As they turn your dream to shame. ... But there are dreams that cannot be. And there are storms we cannot weather. I had a dream my life would be. So different from this hell I'm living. So different now from what it seemed! Now life has killed the dream I dreamed.

Revolutionaries: Do you hear the people sing, singing the song of angry men? It is the music of a people who will not be slaves again. When the beating of your heart, echoes the beating of the drums. There is a life about to start when tomorrow comes! Will you join in our crusade, who will be strong and stand with me? Beyond the barricade is there a world you long to see? Then join in the fight that will give you the right to be free! Do you hear the people sing, singing the song of angry men? It is the music of a people who will not be slaves again! When the beating of your heart echoes the beating of the drums. There is a life about to start when tomorrow comes! Will you give all you can give, so that our banner may advance? Some will fall and some will live, will you stand up and take your chance? The blood of the martyrs will water the meadows of France! Do you hear the people sing, singing the song of angry men? It is the music of a people who will not be slaves again! When the beating of your heart echoes the beating of the drums. There is a life about to start when tomorrow comes!

Gavroche: Liar! Good evening, dear Inspector. Lovely evening, my dear! I know this man, my friends. His name's Inspector Javert! So don't believe a word he says because none of it's true. This only goes to show what little people can do.

Javert: Once a thief, forever a thief. What you want, you always steal. You would trade your life for mine. Yes, Valjean, you want a deal, shoot me now for all I care! If you let me go, beware, you'll still answer to Javert!
Jean Valjean: You are wrong and always have been wrong. I'm a man no worse than any man. And you are free and there are no conditions, no bargains or petitions. There's nothing that I blame you for, you've done your duty, nothing more.
