this was my third watch of this film and the first time at home. i still liked the film and i don't get the hate, which started when the title was announced.
what's wrong with genisys? it's a computer system and if something like that were actually invented today that would be a great name.
this film attempts to modernize the terminator and it does so in a fun and entertaining fashion. with great effects, great action and arnold (both young and old) the movie is a blast. sure, it's not as good as the first two but really, can any sequel to this franchise ever be? even still, it's a solid action sci-fi flick that respects the two movies that came before it and tries for something new.
with that said there are five things that i have to mention this time around. spoilers ahead at this point. i repeat: spoilers ahead...
1. jai courtney isn't that bad here but he isn't that great and he seems to officially be a franchise killer. maybe he will redeem himself in suicide squad.
2. john conner becomes a terminator in this film. with the new technology that he uses why in the hell does he even bother looking like a human to dispatch kyle and sarah and pops? if he took the form of, let's say the floor, then boom! they would all be dead in seconds. i guess the same could be said about the t-1000 in t2 but it makes even less sense here.
3. there are a few jokes that come off as corny and cheesy instead of funny. (but there are enough that work and the father/daughter relationship between arnold and emilia works rather well).
4. the opening scene when young arnold arrives and is about to attack the punks but gets attacked by older arnold is really fun and cool but when you think about it it makes no sense. why wouldn't sarah conner (or old arnold) be in the same local, with the same gun, and just shoot the young arnold right away? why the face to face?
5. if sarah and kyle time travel (and can only do so once) to 2017 then how was john born in 1984 and how did he become the leader of the resistance? it makes no sense, and even though they try explain that the timeline that these three come from no longer exists it still doesn't work if you think about it.
these logic gaps are really annoying and they bring down the film a few notches but it feels as though the writers, rather than making things work with logic, tried to make cool action scenes, include unique ideas and pay humble fan service to the legion of terminator fans instead. i think for the most part this worked. too bad most don't agree...
