the hunger games movies are odd in that all the "boring" talking scenes where nothing happens, which go on for approximately ninety years before any action happens, are way better than any of the actual action scenes of the movie. the last third of catching fire, the actual games themselves, are confusing and poorly paced, leading to an extremely unsatisfying cliffhanger ending. the cliffhanger itself is powerful, and the final shot is phenomenal, but because the whole third act had zero urgency it just feels like the film stopped. it is in fact, so unsatisfying that it's enough to make you... read more

it's aggressively dumb, but that could be okay if it embraced it. instead, it takes itself way too seriously and doesn't recognize the absurdity of its entire concept. it also commits one of the greatest sins in film, not being a self standing story. it ends suddenly in a cliffhanger setup for the sequel, which is common, but they skip actually concluding the story they were telling in this movie. watched as part of scavenger hunt 42 task #22: a ya book that was made into a film. my list | noelle's master list read more

Much more smoothly directed than the first one and at least as entertaining. Jennifer Lawrence is once again a chromosome-pleasing delight. Some of the plot twists make you cry in agony. But the pacing is so damn high that there isn't enough time to realise how ridiculous it all is (some of the characters die without reason and I couldn't care less about the living ones). Splitting Mockingjay into two parts will probably ruin the franchise in the end. But Catching Fire is a decent installment. read more

always meant to catch up with these films, i saw the first one in cinemas and really enjoyed it. jennifer lawrence is a great lead. its hard to believe shes not shaking with fright in the tense scenes. elizabeth banks and woody harrelson are superb. philip seymour hoffman, as always, incredible. evil empire, cruelty as a sport, an earned heros journey, and a strong finish. the tweaks to the recipe work well, it stands out well as a sequel. its a little long, the music isnt mind blowing, but the special effects and costumes kept my interest. not quite as hot as the first time, but it does make... read more

Joint winners in a game that prescribed one survivor only, Katniss and Peeta are unexpectedly called back in action for a special edition designed to kill them before their popularity further increases, igniting rebellion.
