as someone who has never seen any of the star wars films in full, i was interested in seeing how the force awakens would hold up without its nostalgic punches to save it. going into the film, i knew the most prominent protagonists, i knew the visual style, williams score, and i knew that stormtroopers were useless wastes of space that couldnt hit someone right under their nose. so, i was quite pleased when the opening of the film rescinded that latter note. stormtroopers remain cannon fodder with low hit scores, but by following finn, formerly fn-whatever, i suddenly found all of the the... read more

well i didn't think i'd do it, having seen it twice already, but my local theatre was offering a hell of a deal on movies today (500 points instead of 1500 for a movie) so i went to see star wars: the force awakens in imax. what can i say that i haven't said already? ummm... i love this movie. i was never the biggest star wars fan. i always really liked the series but i prefer star trek over the wars. this film though is amazing. it is so fun and a perfect sequel that you really couldn't ask for anything better. it really hits all the beats you want and through mimicking the first three films... read more

it's a bodacious space opera with a female main character, no cringe-worthy characters, and no romance, so why isn't this 5 stars? surely daisy ridley and the rest of the cast is worth 5 full stars, no? well, they are, though rey is ubercompetent even where it could have been avoided. two things overwhelm the positives. first, the massive, massive repetition of scenes and themes and props - it is relentless, it permeates the entire movie; it's not a "homage" when the first movie informs almost everything in this one. and yes, the characters are all great... except kylo ren, yet again a read more

the force awakens returns the star wars franchise to the glory and form of a new hope and the rest of the original trilogy by becoming, essentially, an imitation of them. albeit, a very good imitation and one that is pretty well crafted by j.j abrams but an imitation nonetheless. the heavy focus on imitation both helps and hurts the film simultaneously, reminding us of what was so great about the original while failing to feel fresh or feel like there is a new story being explored here. to me, this film seems like an extreme reaction to the criticisms of the prequel trilogy. the prequel read more

one way or another, star wars: the force awakens was going to be the biggest entertainment news to end 2015. the first live-action film in the franchise since the much-reviled prequels was the most anticipated film of the year for most people and while its financial success was guaranteed, it still had a lot to live up to in order to eliminate the bad connotations of the prequels (and the clone wars movie, for that matter). it's odd to consider this film as having been in a precarious position, but it was virtually guaranteed to start new arguments across the internet as incredibly high read more

it's so weird this opens without the fox fanfare because this film already feels nostalgic to me due to all the hype,merchandise and the fact this is currently the last film i watched with my nan in general and i miss these days (i remember her finding bad robot productions pretty funny). it felt more magical in the time but re-watching it makes it feel weaker but i'm glad we got to see the original cast members return. at least i can watch this without just being like oh is that the person who was in ex machina that movie that sounds amazing in my head..... The commercialization of art doesn't get any clearer. An absolutely shallow and nonsensical imitation, stripped of any thematic complexity. A fucking void. A non-movie. The fact that this was a financial and critical success shows how late-stage capitalism has degraded any sense of artistic or spiritual consciousness in the populace. At the time of the release of TFA the PT was hated upon so to make the first in the ST to feel like ANH isn't a bad idea and was a promise to a solid Star Wars trilogy.
