leading up to homecoming, ive been skeptical of this movie. why? because ive been hurt so many times before by spider-man. when i first saw spider-man 3, i was in complete and utter denial. same with the amazing spider-man 2, quite honestly. because i was 11 and 18 at the time and my spidey sense wasnt attuned when it come to the cinema. well, not until boyhood and birdman, anyways. you see, i love spider-man so much that i was just denying that spider-man 3 made venom, the symbiote, sandman, hobgoblin, etc., into the worst possible versions i could imagine. venom wasnt this bulking guy who killed everyone he saw just for giggles. he was a photojournalist who felt utterly destroyed by peter parker by destroying his photoshop job of black suites spider-man. new goblin just 2007d green goblin and threw away all these years of harrys development as an enemy to spider-man. he came off as cheesy in some parts.
with homecoming, i desperately wanted to avoid a situation where my favorite superhero would be mcud with iron man gear and wouldnt be smart enough to defeat the vulture using his brain.
well, tom holland knocks it out of the park. i was concerned with the john hughes vibes everyone was telling me about, but it totally works with this incarnation of spider-man and where he is in his career. peter parker isnt trying to save the world, hes just trying to protect those in his neighborhood and try to impress tony stark enough to earn a permanent place in the avengers. does he screw up a lot? yes. a lot. a lot a lot. but thats what endears us to spider-man. hes just a kid way over his own head and trying to do his best.
thats about all i can say without geeking out and giving major spoilers away. go see it. in 3d. especially if youre a spider-fan.
