full disclosure, i am watching this movie after seeing blade runner 2049. i think this movie is comprised of a myriad of problems from start to finish. for instance, most of the dialogue is noticeably unnatural, evident as soon as deckards boss opens his mouth. he is also one of a number of ill-fitting anachronisms in this film. other examples that i noticed were lines such as “questions. i dont know answers”, “theyre toys, my friends are toys, i make them”. very unnatural and in fact help to paint essentially a caricature of any foreign character. there was just a strange underlying sense of humor here. i also do not like deckards tendency to think aloud in some of his conversations. speaking of deckard, his falsetto is just cringe/inducing, and the “kiss me”/“i want you” scene was extremely uncomfortable if not borderline sexual assault. getting into some of the technical aspects, i was not a fan of the score being layered with a variety of sounds that did not work well together and was often intrusive at times. i also did not particularly care for the scene transitions and cuts. however, probably the highlight of this film was the cinematography, it was fantastic. there was a myriad of visually compelling moments, such as deckard scanning the crowd in pursuit. with that being said, the camerawork here was not particularly noteworthy and neither was the direction. there were actually a number of moments that would has benefited from a better director, in my opinion. a few moments i noticed include: zhora just hopping in the shower while deckard was interviewing her, falling through all too many panes of glass, leon just happened to be at the exact location and time this pursuit by deckard was occurring, the initial interaction between pris and sebastian, and many more. ultimately, i feel as if this movie had a substantial amount of unactualized potential. the primary reason to watch this film would be simply because of how visually compelling and appealing this film truly is. other than that theres not a substantial amount of depth, sub-text, or overall thought-provoking moments; as opposed to its successor which boasts a myriad of these and packages it together in an aesthetic masterpiece. suffice it say, i was severely underwhelmed by blade runner.
