What a beautiful tale. There is so much going on here it's difficult to know where to start.
It's the story of someone born with physical and mental disabilities. Someone naïve and innocent, but with integrity and a heart of gold. Someone that against all odds was still able to find success and happiness.
It's a story of multiple dramas, each person having to deal with their battles and daemons: a dying mother with cancer; a neglected and abused child that grows into someone unstable; a woman with a new incurable virus; a war veteran physically incapacitated and mentally scarred.
And these stories happen during important moments of American history: Vietnam War, peace protests, racial protests, Watergate, presidential assassinations, Moon landing, abuse of drugs, HIV/AIDS explosion.
It's a story about life and love. Making the best of the cards you've been dealt with. And finding peace and happiness.
Oh, and it sure can be funny, poking fun at everything both big and small, disarming the seriousness of it when required.

Jenny: Run, Forrest! Run!

Forrest Gump: My momma always said, "Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get."

Lieutenant Daniel Taylor: [to Forrest] We all have a destiny: nothing just happens, it's all part of a plan. I should have died out there with my men, now I'm nothing but a God damn cripple, a leg less freak, do you know what it's like not being able to use your legs? I had a destiny, I was supposed to die out there in the field with honor and you cheated me out of it. This wasn't supposed to happen to me

Forrest Gump: Why are you dying momma?
Mrs. Gump: It's my time. It's just my time. Oh now... Don't you be afraid sweetheart. Death is just a part of life. Something we're all destined to do. I didn't know it, but I was destined to be your momma. I did the best I could.
Forrest Gump: You did good momma.
Mrs. Gump: Well I happen to believe you make your own destiny. You have to do the best with what God gave you.
Forrest Gump: What's my destiny, Mama?
Mrs. Gump: You're gonna have to figure that out for yourself. Life is a box of chocolates, Forrest. You never know what you're gonna get.
Forrest Gump: [narrating] Momma always had a way of explaining things so I could understand them.
Mrs. Gump: I will miss you Forrest.

Lieutenant Daniel Taylor: I never thanked you for saving my life.
Forrest Gump: [narrating] He never actually said so, but i think he made his peace with god.

Forrest Gump: Why don't you love me, Jenny? I'm not a smart man... but I know what love is.

Forrest Gump: That day, for no particular reason, I decided to go for a little run. So I ran to the end of the road. And when I got there, I thought maybe I'd run to the end of town. And when I got there, I thought maybe I'd just run across Greenbow County. And I figured, since I run this far, maybe I'd just run across the great state of Alabama. And that's what I did. I ran clear across Alabama. For no particular reason I just kept on going. I ran clear to the ocean. And when I got there, I figured, since I'd gone this far, I might as well turn around, just keep on going. When I got to another ocean, I figured, since I'd gone this far, I might as well just turn back, keep right on going. When I got tired, I slept. When I got hungry, I ate. When I had to go, you know, I went.

Reporters: Sir where are you running? Why are you running? Are you doing this for world peace? Are you doing this for the homeless? Are you running for women's rights? Or for the environment? Or for animals?
Forrest Gump: [narrating] They just couldn't believe that somebody would do all that running for no particular reason.
Reporters: Why are you doing this?
Forrest Gump: I just felt like running.

Bumper Sticker Guy: WOAH! Man, you just ran through a big pile of dog shit!
Forrest Gump: It happens.
Bumper Sticker Guy: What, shit?
Forrest Gump: Sometimes.

Forrest Gump: My momma always said you've got to put the past behind you before you can move on. And I think that's what my running was all about.

Forrest Gump: Jenny, I don't know if Momma was right or if, if it's Lieutenant Dan. I don't know if we each have a destiny, or if we're all just floating around accidental-like on a breeze, but I, I think maybe it's both. Maybe both is happening at the same time. I miss you, Jenny. If there's anything you need, I won't be far away.
