the name of steven spielberg usually guarantees something special and minority report certainly is. the futuristic thriller is set in washington dc in the year 2054 and is based on the (short) story 'the minority report' by science-fiction writer philip k. dick (1928-1982). dick's work is popular in hollywood because films like blade runner and total recall are also inspired by his work. dick suffered from depression, experimented with psychedelic drugs, and was paranoid therefore it's not surprising that dick's work does not show a cheerful picture of the future. the future human is a psychologically distraught being in a haunting big brother society.
all dickian elements are present in minority report. washington in 2054 is a chilly, depressing city in which the residents are constantly under-eye scans by the authorities, and personally addressed by "live" billboards. the number of murders in the city is negligible thanks to a special investigation department: pre-crime. john anderton (tom cruise) is the spider in the web. the heart of pre-crime is formed by 'the temple' where three so-called pre-cogs (pre-cognitive) lie in a basin: agatha (samantha morton), dashiel, and arthur (all named after famous crime authors.) the pre-cogs, being the unintended product of a genetic experiment, have a special gift: they can see future murders. the visions of the three pre-cogs are visualized via conductive liquid in the basin, after which anderton slides with graceful arm movements and plays with the images to determine the location of the future crime. the ritual performed to music by schubert is a breathtakingly beautiful scene. a kind of lottery ball machine produces two shiny wooden marbles, in which the name of the perpetrator and the victims respectively are engraved. once the scene of the crime is known, a police unit is running fast to prevent the murder and bring in the future perpetrator.

the system seems flawless until anderton himself is designated by the pre-cogs is the future murderer. the avid advocate of pre-crime is forced to face its darker sides. for example, if the pre-cogs can see the actual future, how is it possible that a pre-crime unit can still prevent those crimes? the bottom under pre-crime is swept away by pre-cog agatha, who was kidnapped from the basin by anderton because he thinks there is a so-called "minority report" in her head: an aberrant vision that would prove his innocence. "we have never seen the future ... you have a choice," says agatha anderton.
anderton, who is fleeing from his own colleagues, begins to suspect that he is being framed by someone. to escape the inevitable eye scans, he has two new eyes fitted in a hilarious horror scene. together with pre-cog agatha and in possession of a set of new eyes ("good morning mr. yakamoto", a friendly billboard tells anderton at one point), the time of the murder is getting closer. will anderton indeed kill someone? or does a "minority report" prove its innocence? the film answers these and other questions nicely, although there is also a tantalizing alternative explanation of the conclusion of minority report. in order not to spoil the fun for the people who have not yet seen the film,
steven spielberg paid a lot of attention to the special effects in minority report. he had a think tank brainstorm about what society might look like in the year 2054. this resulted in several particularly creative discoveries, of which the "spiders" are a good example. these robot spiders are used by pre-crime to make eye scans and provide a beautiful scene when anderton is attacked by them. tom cruise is well on track in minority report. he once again shows that he is one of hollywood's most in-demand stars for a reason. a notable supporting role in minority report is for newcomer colin farrell (who currently stars with al pacino in the recruit) farrell plays a representative of the attorney general who has to investigate and is skeptical of the pre-crime phenomenon. . there is also an important supporting role for max von sydow (the exorcist), as (co) creator and chief boss of pre-crime. but the show, besides cruise, is stolen by samantha morton, who impresses in her role as pre-cog agatha.
all in all, minority report is an intelligent sci-fi thriller filmed in a strikingly chilly blue light. it gives the film an extra dimension. i recommend it.
