Watched this movie for the first time 30 years after it was produced. A time before cellphones and internet.
The movie does show some signs of aging, it can be a bit over the top sometimes (eg: dozens of police for a single criminal already restrained), implausible at others (eg: the face mask), and its penultimate scene was quite disappointing. Despite all of that, it still holds up pretty well, mostly because of Antony Hopkins performance, but Jodie Foster and the writing too. Well directed and overall a great movie. It's legacy and iconic scenes live on.
Quite curious how travestites were portrayed as mentally disturbed people back then, yet today they are seen as perfectly normal and have their rights protected by law.
Also fascinating is the look into the mind of the charismatic and psychopathic Hannibal Lecter. Very intelligent, perceptive, cultured, but even more violent, sadistic and gruesome.

Inmate: [to Clarisse as walks by] I can smell your cunt.

Hannibal Lecter: Good morning.
Clarisse: Dr. Lecter, my name is Clarice Starling. May I speak with you?
Hannibal Lecter: You're one of Jack Crawford's, aren't you?
Clarisse: I am, yes.
Hannibal Lecter: May I see your credentials?
Clarisse: Certainly.
Hannibal Lecter: Closer, please. Clo- ser.

Hannibal Lecter: Oh, no, no, no, no. You were doing fine. You had been courteous and receptive to courtesy. You had established trust with the... embarrassing truth about Miggs. And now this... ham-handed segue into your questionnaire. It won't do.

Hannibal Lecter: Enthrall me with your acumen.

Hannibal Lecter: A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti. [makes slurpy noise]

Hannibal Lecter: All good things to those who wait.

Hannibal Lecter: Look for severe childhood disturbances associated with violence. Our Billy wasn't born a criminal, Clarice. He was made one through years of systematic abuse. Billy hates his own identity, you see, and he thinks that makes him a transsexual. But his pathology is a thousand times more savage and more terrifying.
