certainly not our favourite film of this year or the last, and certainly undeserving of all its oscar nominations. nonetheless, great costuming and acting from all. not as funny as i'd have liked it, but perhaps that wasn't the point. read

2018 catch-up 6/ great performances. olivia colman stands out not only in the film, but in the entire year. stone and weisz play off each other brilliantly. nicholas hoult even gets a chance to shine. lanthimos is such a good director. he's able to make this film stand out compared to his previous entries as he prioritizes the cinematography and production design over hyperbolic metaphors and wooden acting. yorgos is 3 for 3 (as far as i've seen). i hope he soon gets the recognition and box office he deserves. love the natural lighting and wide angle camera used for the cinematography. while... read

i thought this was a nice example of a historical film that felt alive and vibrant, and avoided the perils of being too reverential. this is partly from the way it was directed, but also the great performances of the three leads. i really enjoyed this film. read

i love this movie. i think i like sacred deer more, even though i can't say why. this movie is so much bigger in scale than his older ones, the cast is out of this world. the soundtrack makes you wanna disappear into your chair and holy mother, i can't let my eyes wander off emma stone's face. this is a masterpiece, which once again defines both the words "unique" and "weird" and which everyone should watch while it's still running in the cinema. why can't they all three just win the oscars? seriously? and who is the main protagonist anyway?! read

i rewatched this in preparation for attending a recording of my favourite podcast, the bechdel cast and i have to say, i enjoyed it a lot more on second viewing! this time i wasn't going in with the same preconceived notions i had on my first viewing from the trailer so i focused on different attributes. i really appreciated that this film doesn't give a crap about men. it's a story about a battle of wits between three strong and distinct female voices, each operating from a different position of power. the themes of love, grief and loyalty are also more complicated than i initially gave the... read

i think this movie got four stars from me mainly because of the performances. theres a reason all three of them are nominated. i wish both stone and weisz could win. they were quick, raw, and unflinching in their devious humor and it was a delight to watch. the writing is of course what made all of that possible and deserves recognition. while davis did get the well deserved nomination, my bet is on schrader. thats neither here nor there. davis made the plot easy to follow by making you focus way more on the characters than an offscreen war. this was much more of a straight forward film than... read

this is a well made film that explores the knotted mess that is the political machine and how manipulated it can be. that was true in the early 18th century, and it it still true today. the three leads all give tremendous performances that really carry the film. nicholas hoult is fantastic as well, giving some of the most biting lines in a script filled with punches below the belt. despite all of the pieces being right, this film never quite wowed me. i enjoyed it quite a bit, but it was missing something to push it into being a really contender for best of the year. read

scavenger hunt 75 — 13/30: go to crew > costume on the movie with your favorite costumes and watch a movie with the same costume designer. there's something about films set in the 18th century revolving around royals, they can look so ridiculously stunning and be filled with wonderful performances, but absolutely cannot hold my interest for the two hour plus runtimes they often require. read

It is mind-boggling to me to see how audiences are infatuated by period pieces showcasing the 'glamour' of aristocracy. While the period of these films shift, all of these works make the same error: they fall in the trap of hopelessly wallowing in the self-importance of its characters. Perhaps it is a testament to the extent in which some of the most awful people in history have succeeded in creating an image that transcends history, and makes even people today (who should now better) interested in these lives and even revering them. Michael Collins once asked, retorically, 'how did those read

watched this on an airplane and found out later that in the unedited version emma stone is topless and long story short i travel by train now. most of the popular reviews for this on letterboxd pretty much just say "the performances were great, the sets were great, the directing was inventive, the costumes were great, the story was f'd up...squeee! i loved it!" yeah, maybe tell us something we couldn't figure out from watching 30 seconds of the trailer? how about this: the film appears to be a period piece but is mostly anachronistic and fictional. intentionally so. the costumes are made of... read

enjoyed most scenes with lady sarah and queen anne, thanks mostly to rachel weiszs and olivia colmans delicious performances as well as certain parts of the plot, but thanks in no part to yorgos lanthimos empty, pointless, and very often distracting direction. lanthimos propensity for and exhibition of vulgarity, instead of seeming provocative and daring, are stale and cringe-worthy; they look like horseshit especially in light of my recent viewing of dušan makavejevs irreverent, subversive, and intelligent wr: mysteries of the organism. i hate the last scene; the film drags in the final read

In early 1700's England, two cousins pull no punches in their competition over the favours of Queen Anne Stuart. Lanthimos's first experience working on someone else's screenplay plays like an icy, period variation on "All About Eve", with Stone clawing her way to the top and Weisz trying to hold on to her position. Deliberately denying viewers a character worth rooting for, "The Favourite" doesn't take sides in observing its two protagonists as they scheme against each other - one claiming to do it for the sake of her country, while her antagonist openly pursues her cynical goals - but it... read

This is my 3rd Yorgos movie and both the best and accessible of what I have seen if you are wondering if you should dip your toes into his universe.
I really loved everything in this movie from the camera work, the 3 main leads all fucking KILLED it, they brought their A game for sure. The pettiness and catty nature of the court was just off the charts and everyone held their own brilliantly.
I thought it did such a great job of showing the other side of the drama that happens in this kind of setting with women fighting in the only way they are allowed to during this time period.
There is... read

The Favourite has been warmly received from a lot of critics and moviegoers possibly on the back of the Directors previous films "The Lobster" and "Killing Of A Sacred Deer". The here female leads of Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz are all good amnd what really excels are the costumes and locations. Although this cant be classed as your average "Period" movie it was not really for me. I know it will do well during awards season. read
