as you might expect with a subtitle of the first avenger, director joe johnston is given a lot to communicate to the audience through this film. by 2011, wed see a hulk, an iron man (1 and 2) and the heir to asgard, thor. where has captain america been? who is shield? why is this one man so important? the films answers are much more comprehensive. steve rogers (chris evans) transformation into captain america is a symbolic one as well as physical and psychological. at the beginning we meet steve rogers, a 90-pound kid from brooklyn who is beaten up in every alley and street corner you can read more

another great movie from marvel! catfa is a great action romp that takes place in the early 40's and involves nazi's. who doesn't love a movie when the bad guys are nazi's? chris evans redeems himself after the failed fantastic four movies and he is surrounded by sam jackson, tommy lee jones and a wonderfully evil and over the top hugo weaving. great effects and great direction (from joe johnston of all people) make this a must see action adventure fantasy sci-fi comedy drama hybrid that not only works by itself as it's own movie but perfectly sets up the avengers. four stars indeed!!! 80/100... read more

the biggest beating heart of the mcu so far, captain america seems to cut straight to the best aspects of the whole superhero concept. the first avenger is stylish, funny, sincere, action packed, and has a great cast of characters. it also embraces full scale spectacle in a way that marvel studios hadn't until this point. the wwii setting with the peripheral sci-fi trappings made this one feel like a star wars flick. the wit and the pacing feel so very familiar in the best way possible. peggy and steve are adorable. i think i appreciate this one more now than i ever did before. i'm really read more

upon rewatch, captain america: the first avenger is a lot better than i remember. no, it's not the refined marvel superhero formula, it's still a little campier than most people can handle, but it's still the story of where steve came from and why he does what he does, and it was told fairly well overall. the only problems i find are the lack of bucky's involvement, although that gets resolved in the winter soldier, and some of the dialogue isn't all that great, with more favor to action sequences than conversations overall. still a pretty good movie for being one of the earlier superhero read more

1940s movies are a hard sell for me. the actual films produced in that time were following the hayes code, which if you don't know was a kind of voluntary movie censorship before the mpaa ratings system. that means not only did the films cut the swearing, sex, nudity, blood, explicit violence, drug use, and so on, but also they had story rules like "villainy can never be rewarded", "the hero and heroine fall in love in 5 minutes or less", and apparently "non-white non-males don't get to be heroic, much less lead characters". then there are films like this one, made later but placed primarily... read more

I don't think there's been a marvel movie quite like this one. It's so different and somewhat dreary, whilst also being fun, colourful and exciting.  We get to see so many characters for the very first time! Steve, Peggy, Howard AND Bucky!! Not to mention, Hydra is born. Everybody's so likeable, the characters are really well written and just gooorgeous.  My only issue with this movie is that Steve and Bucky aren't closeted boyfriends, because come on. But hey, it's still a fantastic movie and no matter what I know in Winter Soldier, Bucky's 'death' will always make my heart read more
