when i was 16/17 i adored everything that kevin smith put out. i first saw mallrats and worked from there. i can't put my finger on it but i seemed to just stop enjoying his work. lately though, i've felt the urge to watch his output again. i can only attribute that to watching comic book men. smith writes a whole better than he directs. he's far from being a bad director but he just seems to place the camera and go for it. there's no panache though. you'd think it would be impossible to shoot salma hayek as a stripper and not make it look awesome, somehow that happens here. fuck it, it's read more

dogma is a strange beast of a movie. it is at times hilarious, smart and dramatic while at other times it is juvenile, misguided and irrational. the fourth movie from kevin smith, dogma, plays out nicely but leaves the viewer slightly empty after watching the film. the plot concerns two angels, ben affleck and matt damon, who have been banned from heaven and have found a loop hole that will get them back in. at the same time, a woman, linda fiorentino, is charged by god to stop them. the movie races from one scene to the next, leaving no time to breathe. joke after joke comes flying at the... read more

a surprisingly pro-religion movie for the controversy it stirred. my lapsed catholic ass can't help but appreciate the utterly sincere monologues on faith. all the scenes with matt damon and ben affleck are delicious, petty nonsense. could do without jay and silent bob, the weird homophobia, barrage of fat jokes, and inexplicable immaculate conception. i just want to watch my two closeted angel sons bickering about how extreme is too extreme for divine punishment. read more

An abortion clinic worker who's lost her faith, a Muse and an unknown black apostle join Jay and Silent Bob in the quest to stop two fallen angels from unmaking the entire universe by disproving God's infallibility. Overlong and saddled by self indulgence but a rare one-of-a-kind movie nonetheless. At the very least, it scores some points for being able to only offend people who deserve to be read more

I like Kevin Smith but this movie has just about nothing going for it. The characters are all either cliche, boring, or annoying. I laughed about 3 times, but the rest of the movie made me forget what I even laughed at/about.. There are a couple of legitimately provocative discussions in the film, but most of the time the dialogue is just bumbling nonsense that doesn't lead anywhere. Based on other reviews I'm in the minority because this is one of Kevin Smith's worst films, in my opinion. read more
