man, if there's one thing film has really been missing during the pandemic (you know, besides most other things), it is big dumb fun. and with godzilla vs. kong we have the biggest, dumbest fun i've seen in remotely recent memory. adam wingard's kaiju vs. giant ape smackdown makes the fast & furious movies look grounded in realism by comparison, but it doesn't forget to make things as enjoyable as those are. let's get this part out of the way real quick: there is nothing about this plot that makes a lick of sense. it's all ridiculous wackiness about hollow earth and psionic interfaces and read more

this movie is extremely dumb, but it is exactly what it needs to be. much like the later fast and furious movies, the premise has become so absurd that there is no way to even pretend that it could be grounded in reality. this leaves the only possibility remaining to completely dive into the silliness and boy does it. the structure is fundamentally the same as godzilla: king of the monsters but it fixes all of my major complaints. shaving a half hour off the runtime is huge and helps it move better so the obligatory dumb human scenes aren't as insufferable. it also significantly scales back... read more

Finally a MonsterVerse-movie that is actually about monsters. So far, these films have been mostly thinly-written characters blabbering about while some expensive CGI is going on in the background. So it's a relief to see that Adam Wingard at least gets the aesthetics of the kaiju-genre right. if you wanted to let them fight, you got it all in this one. and, both godzilla and kong get a lot more facetime, especially when duking it out with each other and versus mechagodzilla. the whole movie is actually quite colorful and basically removes the thunder, rainclouds, and darkness from the previous films. also, a+ for working in one of the classic versions of mechagodzilla, that was a really cool fight. conversely, we got a non-existent human story this time around. the only thing they really did was put kong on a boat, and the rest of the movie was the humans just following the read more

I honestly forgot how much I loved the first film. But after watching the second film yesterday it reminded me, then just continued over into this film. I normally really hate films super dependent on CGI anything, but I still just really love these films. Okay, so first off, I will be re-watching this before my HBO Max month runs out. Maybe it's because I watched it at home with other people (not in a theater where I was un-distracted), or maybe it's because I had such high hopes for it, but... I was kind of disappointed. My quick rating - 7;1/10. A Godzilla flick rating that high; and not for campy reasons? You can be sure of it. I am highly surprised; not because visually it is like being smacked in the eyeballs with a sledgehammer but they actually added enough to it to make it more than the epic battle you are here to see. Not only will you get that; but they actually came up with a better side story to heading to the center of the earth than "Journey to the Center of the Earth" did. First thing's first, this is one of those unga bunga Godzillas, not an intellectual one, or character-driven one. That being said, I am a fucking dumbass, and an ape, so the Lizard and Monke fights are actually fun to watch for me. The shots aren't as competently scaled as Shin Godzilla's, so it relies heavily on CGI, HDR, and booming bass. The movie relies heavily on a good setup to match it's flashyness, and it's the first movie since COVID started that I genuinely wish I saw in a theater.
