not terrible, and maybe because i already had low expectations? it's funnier than i thought it would be, which is a good thing. the young cast is great, even that podcast kid everyone apparently seemed annoyed by. i thought he was cute. in fact, most of this movie is cute. leave it to a ghostbusters sequel to accurately capture that small town "kids on bikes" movie aesthetic that everyone goes apeshit for.
i liked the movie best when it was free to be its own weird thing. however, when they start talking about the original ghostbusters in this really reverential way- it sucks. it's just awkward and ill-fitting, like the writers were unable to figure out a normal way for these characters to talk about the past. a little telling, methinks. our pop-cultural obsessive relationship with nostalgia is blinding and it affects how we view things from the past.
even acknowledging that in a humorous fashion would've made this movie a million times better. but there's no self-awareness to be found here. scenes are paced and shot for big nostalgic reveal moments because they know that's what the audience is waiting to see. with endless winking and nodding, it often robs the movie of an organic flow and leaves it feeling like a theme park ride instead. see also: star wars: the force awakens, jurassic world, et al. these movies can be fun, but goddamn am i tired of this trend.
the cast is charming and able, and i did have a lot of fun with the movie- but it's like a dessert that's good but leaves a weird lingering aftertaste. and nothing is as especially weird as how the movie features harold ramis again. felt pretty uncomfortable about that if i'm being honest. i take issue with jason reitman's "giving it back to the fans" mentality and approach to the film. kinda disrespectful and annoying.
but, at the end of the day, the movie felt relatively harmless and fairly darn cute. at least it made me laugh a few times.
