i'm not sure if this was intended to parody fantasy films or not, but i think it was serious. it hits all of the classic fantasy tropes really hard, but not really in an entertaining way. i really liked the creature design and tim curry's devil and his goblin henchmen were fun characters that i enjoyed. there was just nothing else interesting about this film. tom cruise is a bland hero that was devoid of any charisma or charm, which is really tough for a tom cruise character. cruise also just looked a little lost throughout. this may be the first time that i've seen a performance from him read more

an eight-layer parfait of set and costume design excess. you've got your big honking devil prosthetics, your bubble blowing snow machines, a weird pig goblin, all the hits. i love how many times tom cruise gets on a table to jump over an axe (these goons never learn). i hope mia sara kept her maleficent dress. it's an 80s fantasy movie, though, so this is all in service of dull pseudo-catholicism and a lot of characters hastily explaining the lore like it's your first shift at fantasy costco. if you're going all in on paperback cover cheese you should have some fun with your characters. read more

My quick rating - 6;4/10. Set in a nicely created world by Ridley Scott; this fantasy tale does somewhat lean on the darker side of typical fairies and unicorns. This follows a very young Tom Cruise in a journey to save his princess; and defeat the Lord of Darkness (Tim Curry). Most likely the reason @deedee chose this flick for #shocktober was the very well done costume and makeup work throughout this flick.
