when i ripped this for transfer to my ipad i forgot something crucial. subtitles. as, most, films i watch are in english i rarely ever needs subtitles. i completely forgot about whole sections of this being in french and german. a smidgen of italian too. i realised my mistake very quickly. however; i decided to press on and see how i did. my french is gcse standard. plus i haven't practised it for years. i fared pretty well in my opinion. admittedly i had the benefit of having seen the film before but i was able to more or less follow along with the conversation. the german sections? i was... read more

on this rewatch, i viewed a fanedit called "avenging angel" that separates out shosanna's story into a 1-hour short film. this was just a workprint, but it works very well. we open with hans lanza's scene on the french farm (essentially shosanna's origin story), and then go to years later when she has managed to take over the identity of emmanuelle, a french cinema owner. the story basically follows a young german war hero (fredrick zoller) as he becomes infatuated with emmanuelle and convinces joseph goebbels to premiere his new propaganda film at her theater. this leads to another read more

as a huge fan of quentin tarantino, it is quite difficult for me to choose a favorite among his rather impressive filmography. that being said, inglourious basterds is possibly his best work and a great piece of historical fiction mixing the right amount of history with the right amount of fiction. beautiful visuals, tight script and amazing performances. read more
