[director's cut] mike really impressed me with this one, i wasn't sure if he'd be able to pull it off but it's quite effective. new characters are engaging and the plot is served well from its literary adaptation, avoiding most of the pitfalls of the usual lazy film sequel. tasteful cinematography that carefully reinterprets kubrick's style, but with flanagan's modern perspective. sits nicely alongside the shining. the last half sometimes wavered in the writing dept. and the pacing went a bit adrift. perhaps the theatrical cut is better in this regard. i imagine that cut to be both better and... read more

watching the extended version, i didn't really notice much difference from the theatrical cut. that probably means the extra half hour didn't really add much and probably wasn't worth the time. doctor sleep recaptures a lot of the style and general vibe of the shining while being a distinctly different film. read more

it's always scary when an unexpected sequel to a masterpiece comes out decades later. you almost anticipate it tarnishing the name of it's predecessor, but i can firmly say that doctor sleep is the exception to the trend. this was a very well done extension of the story that didn't ruin or take away anything from the shining. you get to see what "shining" really is capable of. it's well acted, well shot, suspenseful and rewarding. there were no cop outs or cheesy junk here. it paid homage to the original and some scenes really struck me emotionally(bartender scene). if you have time certainly... read more

i wanted to joke and say this is just monster's inc. but the movie got better and better as i watched to the point where i still think that but not as a joke but as flatter. felt a bit like fargo too, being adjacent to some canonized classic, but maintaining the tone and vibe of the original. read more

Had been putting off watching this after reading some of the reviews when it came out. Shouldn't let critics opinions get to me, but alas.Anyways, it's been so long since The Shining that I remember about 2 scenes and 0 plot points in it, so keep that in mind.But, I absolutely loved this movie. The story, the acting, the visuals, the throwbacks to the first movie. Just fantastic. I recommend this for anyone, even if you haven't seen The Shining. I think it works great as a stand alone as well. read more
