for many years i believed that old hollywood was filled with happy endings and stereotypes and generic acting and motivations. yet as i watch more and more 'classics' i am discovering that i was misguided. sure there are plenty of films that fall into that but then there are films like don't bother to knock or shock corridor. that this was made by a hollywood studio in 1963 is not only surprising but shocking as well. although somewhat tame today i can only imagine the stripper scene, the acting, the plot, the ideas being controversial and unlike anything the audience had ever scene. there is... read

a reporter gets planted in a mental hospital to solve the murder of a patient, he's got three leads who supposedly witnessed it but they're not easy nuts to crack, never mind holding on to his own sanity in the meantime. as expected from the director of white dog this is no fluff piece, it's tensions from the get go and rarely ever loosens its chokehold. could've gone a bunch of different directions in the end, which really speaks to its unpredictability and maybe the fact it had me imagining other outcomes also speaks to how ahead of its time it was in dealing with mental health (care) read
