Review of The Suicide Squad

After the previous movie, it was pretty hard to make people interested in Suicide Squad again. Which is kinda sad, you know? Especially since 2016 movie wasn't... really... that... bad... David Ayer (who claims that his movie was heavily ruined by the studio now) got the right atmosphere, he got the great cast, but somehow, his movie ended up being painfully boring and straightforward. That's just it. It was the only AAA comic book adaptation that literally made me fall asleep. I'm not kidding. I did... fell... asleep while watching it. So, in the new movie they've decided to do exactly the opposite. They hired James Gunn and let him do his thing. Did it work? Well, long story short – yes. Yes, it did. With a couple of “buts”, though.

See, while Ayer's movie provided us with that certain comic book feeling we all know and love (naturally, there were all kinds of Suicide Squad comics, but I think that what we've seen in Ayer's movies was the most iconic look), Gunn's version is... well, it's not like we didn't have anything like that in comics (that's just the thing about comics - they try all sorts of approaches there), but... let's just say it is not the first thing you think about when you hear “Suicide Squad”. See, this movie? It's crazy. Well, it's James Gunn, so... yeah. The new Suicide Squad is a hard-boiled mix between Super, Guardians of the Galaxy and whatever else there is. There are rivers of blood, there's a lot of humor and so on. Like I said, it's James Gunn. And personally? I kinda... had problem with that. Kinda.

I mean... as much as I disliked David Ayer's movie, that was exactly how I like my Suicide Squad. Darkness, rain, the depressing atmosphere, Katana... that's the stuff. Here? It's, like, one big joke. Even the iconic characters like Captain Boomerang here exist only for fun. And it's kinda... hard to swallow. BUT only until a certain point where you begin to see this movie for what it really is. See, this movie? It isn't really a Suicide Squad thing. It's Harley Quinn. Think I won't surprise anyone by saying that Margot Robbie was born to play our beloved crazy clown. But the thing is – she never had a good movie. She was in Ayer's Suicide Squad and the movie sucked. She was in Birds of Prey and it was meh at best too. She saved both movies a lot, but still, she deserved better. And here it is. Better.

Of course, I'm not trying to say that Harley Quinn takes all the spotlight here. What I'm trying to say is that the new Suicide Squad feels a lot like the adaptation of Harley Quinn comics. You know, with hot dogs, dead beaver and sh*t. The atmosphere-wise? That's EXACTLY what we have here. And when you begin to look at this movie from that angle? It's kinda fantastic. DC desperately needed their own Deadpool. And guess what? Here it is. We all know just how often Harley Quinn comics are blamed to copy Deadpool, so... yeah. It's a freakin' Deadpool. Except personally, I feel that the new Suicide Squad is better. Here. Said it. It's less dirty (which is a good thing), more gory (way, WAY more gory), it's funnier and it's way, WAY more stylish and creative than MARVEL's infamous psycho.

It's also impossible not to love the cast. Viola Davis's Amanda Waller is great as usual (she makes you hate her so-o-o much), Idris Elba is love, Peter Capaldi is a pure joy, John Cena FINALLY got the role he deserved on the big screen, Sly is killing it as King Shark (seriously, he's so-o-o funny), while Daniela Melchior... OK, let me tell you about Daniela Melchior, since I think I'm in love here. Seriously, she's so-o-o cute as Ratcatcher 2 that you'll want to hug her all the time. And unlike 2016 movie? There's also a lot of complications inside the team. There's tension, there are twists, the characters actually evolve... Really cool stuff.

So, in the end, the only question you should ask yourself is how do you feel about Deadpool. If you like Deadpool movies and / or enjoy Harley Quinn comics? This movie is for you. You'll love it. Simple like that. If you expected a classic Suicide Squad thing, you'll be in trouble and probably end up with a weird aftertaste, but well, I don't think there was another way. DC needed to make people interested in Suicide Squad again, they needed their own Deadpool on the big screen, they needed to actually achieve that certain Harley Quinn feeling and so on. This movie? It nails all of it. So, no matter how you look at it, it's a success. I can't say I recommend this movie to everybody, since, let's just admit it, all that violence and crazy humor is not for everybody, but like I said, as long as you enjoy Deadpool and Harley Quinn comics? Don't you even think about skipping this flick. Dixi.
