waves proves to be both laughably incompetent in its execution and utterly offensive in what it expects of its audience. shults' trainwreck aims less to craft an emotionally charged story about a family chugging through a relatable, yet dark struggle in their lives and more to impress as many crowds of people it possibly can, which is ultimately its unforgivable downfall.
however surface-level the plot may be, shults insists on tacking on staples of the typical film that would only impress the a24 crowd and middle schoolers rather than letting the story develop naturally to fruition.
frank ocean tracks and aspect ratio changes plague what could've been (admittedly, nothing more than) a cute story to insist upon its audience that this film is more that meets the eye. its faux-depth is an obnoxious attempt at winning over anyone that doesn't yet recognize that this story and these themes have been told hundreds of times before in hundreds of better ways.
outside of the reprehensible pandering, the film's progression has no focus and zero aim of where it wants to go or crescendo to or what themes it wants to convey. by the halfway point, shults' is creating an inconsequential path for the story to lead to, and by the time the credits roll, i'm just left wondering what anybody can attain from painfully sitting through the stagnant 135 minutes.
while neither krisha nor it comes at night impressed me very much, nothing could have prepared me for the headache-inducing third entry in the shults filmography. appealing to a crowd and appearing profound take priority over natural storytelling for the humdrum filmmaker.
