there were a fair number of biopics released in 2020 -- some quite good, and some abjectly awful. josephine decker's shirley is by far the most interesting among them. decker's tale of the haunting of hill house novelist shirley jackson's fictional friendship with a young college student during the writing of hangsaman in 1951 uses its artistic license to play almost more like a dramatic thriller than a straight biopic. odessa young, michael stuhlbarg, and logan lerman deliver fine performances as the college student rose, jackson's husband stanley edgar hyman, and rose's husband fred, read more

an odd little character drama directed in jarring fashion, "shirley" is like an impressionist painting of an impressionist painting of a story that was passed along through a game of telephone. the final result is a bit confusing, somewhat amusing, and has a kernel of truth buried in it somewhere, but you'll need help finding it. shirley jackson is probably best known to americans for her short story "the lottery", which i had to read for english lit classes at least 4 times that i can remember. while it's a horrific story, she was also the mother of four children and wrote two books of read more

fil tailored for elizabeth moss, in which without any doubt shines so strongly that he manages to make the whole film his own. not negligible the work of his co-stars and the musical setting of the film. without a doubt i dared to say that it is one of the best films i have seen this year. read more
