A fictionalized, but accurate, account of the biggest man made disaster (excluding warfare). It provides a glimpse into the USSR's modus operandi when dealing with a crisis situation.
We can see hubris, incompetence, responsibility dodging, blame diversion, scapegoating... at all levels! Having integrity and competence seemed to be the exception, not the norm.
On the other hand it's important to understand the context of the events, which happened in the USSR during the end of the cold war. When flexing games were still being played with the USA and the West. Still that is no excuse when thousands or millions of lives were at stake.
The most fascinating bit is how the series details the behaviour, and the motivations, of each character and also the machinations of the communist political party. How personal self-interest and hubris, in an economically weakened nation, led to a catastrophic outcome.
We can also see how having a single political party control the whole nation gives way for an extended web of lies, where the main goal of each official is to please their superior, despite what the truth may be.
The other observation is seeing how scarily familiar the human behaviour depicted in the series is to the one in a corporate environment. Where the goal of each worker is to work for their own self-interest instead of the organization (ie: do the work that promotes you instead of the work that needs to be done). Which in essence is what makes capitalism work. Yet it's funny how when at their extremes you can't distinguish capitalism from communism.
I guess the main difference is that in a capitalist country you'll have multiple autonomous units (eg: companies) while in a communist country you have a single and strict chain of command without any autonomy, which is definitely worse than the former.
Another interesting part was seeing how "impossible" events end up materialising. Likely being dismissed by superiors, when raised by their subordinates, for the sake of lower cost or short term goals.
Also can't help seeing some similarities to today's anti-intellectual behavior, where people think their simpleton's or layman's opinion is worth the same as facts stated by an expert.

“The truth doesn’t care about our needs or wants – it doesn’t care about our governments, our ideologies, our religions – to lie in wait for all time. This at last is the gift of Chernobyl.”

“When it’s your life and the lives of everyone you love, your moral conviction doesn’t mean anything.”

“When the truth offends, we lie and lie until we can no longer remember it is even there, but it is still there. ”

“What is the cost of lies? It’s not that we’ll mistake them for the truth. The real danger is that if we hear enough lies, then we no longer recognize the truth at all.”

“Why worry about something that isn’t going to happen?” “Why worry about something that isn’t going to happen? Oh, that’s perfect. They should put that on our money.”

“Our power comes from the perception of our power.”

"Trust but verify."

Very overrated series, fueled by anti-Russian narratives in general. Politics aside i can say that its very immersion breaking series to see British actors with british accents trying to be Russians and Ukrainians. No mainstream review outlet has pointed this out, maybe due to English Supremacy or smth not sure. While its a good series, it doesn't deserve #1 spot.

"Every now and then you can meet with the allergic reaction of the Russian side, which accuses the creators of the series that, despite "apparent attention to some details", lies in essential matters, including he makes of the "Soviet people" some mazgias, and of the Soviet authorities - incompetent cynics, for whom their own citizens are cannon fodder, whose life no one cares about.

As I was a direct witness of the post-catastrophe events, I can autopsy tell you what was NOT shown in the series and what makes the magnitude of Soviet apathy and cynicism incomparably greater than it was shown in the series. As I stated in my speech on Facebook, the Kremlin and their bollards should be grateful that viewers were not shown:

1. That the May Day demonstrations - together with the compulsory presence of children spent on them - took place in both Kiev and Minsk, as if nothing had happened. Only the families of party secretaries urgently left the city. Other children and their parents customarily created a "mask".

2. The fact that the health problems of children, which began in Ukraine and Belarus in May 1986, was explained by the "sprayed mandarins" from Georgia or Armenia.

3. That the radioactive clouds were scattered (shot) over Belarus - only so that they did not come with the wind to Moscow. As a result, 1/3 of Belarus's territory was contaminated. (By the way, the fictional character of Ulana Chomiuk from Minsk is a kind of tribute to the country that suffered the most - otherwise nobody would know about Belarus.)

4. The fact that a huge amount of radiation poisoned year by year (is it still poisoning?) All over Ukraine along the Pripyat water line - the Kiev reservoir (supplying the entire city of Kiev with water) - the Dnieper to the Black Sea. The Pripyat River is extremely contaminated.

5. The fact that the newspapers published a few months after the catastrophe of radioactive contamination of Belarus and Ukraine (in "Evening Minsk" and "Ukrainian Truth" respectively) do not connect with each other - on one side of the border everything is contaminated, on the other it is clean. We all understand that these maps were not prepared in the editorial office of local newspapers ... These maps are pure fiction prepared by the KGB. On these maps, all major cities of the region (Kiev, Chernihiv, Gomel, Mogilev) have been skillfully bypassed by radiation.

6. The fact that ordinary people for many weeks knew nothing about failure and danger, and no one could have thought to at least protect children from running and having fun under the long-awaited May rain ...

7. That, in the USSR, NOBODY would distribute Lugol's fluid so that "ordinary" iodine would be absorbed by the thyroid before it absorbed radioactive iodine. It was Polish communists who cared for the population - the Soviet Union authorities did not care about it to a minimal degree.

8. That, for example, in hungry Crimea, where there was never, even in better years, no meat in stores (except for a few "departmental" stores), suddenly in the summer of 1986 a huge batch of mutton was thrown at the price of potatoes. Where was the meat from - no one knew, but you can draw conclusions yourself.

9. That, according to the orders of the authorities, the contaminated meat should have been processed into sausages, and the more expensive the sausage was, the higher the content of the contaminated meat had to be (that people were 'less willing' to buy expensive sausages, which would make them less truli ... Here is the REAL care of the Soviet authorities for the population!)

10. That all food produced in the contaminated zone - milk, vegetables, preserves (not just meat) - was exported and sold in "clean" regions - probably to "average the temperature of the sick throughout the hospital".

They did not show us this in the series, because such a nightmare and cynicism would make the series in the eyes of an unprepared recipient simply unbelievable. However, I was a WITNESS, hence I know that the truth looked even worse than it appears from the series."

Insane how grossly mishandled the whole situation was and the dire consequences. Shows lengths some go for their own interests.
