I gotta say that I feel like this blatantly misunderstands The Addams Family as a whole. There is nothing wrong with putting a modern spin onto an old beloved thing. But you have to make it work while respecting the source material and what it stood for. This didn't happen here. It's just bad.
Why is our lead stuck in a love triangle and actually gets entrapped by it? Why are we solving murders, putting culprits behind bars and all that? That is not how an Addams operates.
What is it with all those unsubverted cliches? And then we also have the very weird family drama that stains everything this family represents. Their whole dynamic is off. From Pugsely being a soft coward to Wendesday having this very odd conflict with Morticia.
This show has a severe identity problem. Especially thematically. The "Outsiders" vs "Normies" thing doesn't make any sense the way it's done here. We have the supernaturals, the normies/normal humans and Wendesday who is the only real outsider still percieved as one at the weirdly Hogwarts-esque school that's supposed to be THE place for outsiders of ANY kind.
The cast was actually well put together for the most part but ultimately got robbed of being able deliver something meaningful. Luis Guzman especially. Excellent choice for Gomez but his charisma was terribly underutilized. I did like Jenna Ortegas performance in the lead role and it she put noticeable effort into it. Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester was equally great and the way they portrayed Thing was absolutely wonderful.
